Printer Problems

Printer

When the printer becomes jammed or loses connection, ask the lab technician to resolve the problem.

Printing PowerPoints

To print handouts of a PowerPoint presentation:

  • Click the Office Button→Print
  • On the Print screen, choose Handouts from the "Print What" dropdown menu.
  • The default number of slides per page is set to 6, but you can change it.
  • You can save ink by selecting Pure Black and White under Color/Grayscale or click Design and choose a white background with black words

When accessing a PowerPoint presentation from E-Reserves or BlackBoard that is not already in handout format, save it to the desktop and then open it in PowerPoint to print it using the instructions above.

Using CTRL P to print

Sometimes the toolbar with the print icon is not available.

Try hitting the CTRL key and the P at the same time. If this does not work, save the document to the desktop and then open the file.

Print Conservation

Students receive a print quota for each semester that they are enrolled (300 free pages in Fall, 300 free pages in Spring, and 150 free pages in Summer).

When printing, you need to wait for the print conservation message to appear and click on it before your print job will be sent to the printer. You will see your print balance at that time. Remember not to send duplicates to the printer (you will be charged for all copies).

How to Conserve Your Print Quota

  • Print duplex (double-sided) to get two pages for the price of one!
  • Print just the sections of web pages that you need. Highlight the section, select print, and change the Print Range to Selection.
  • Always proofread your papers before printing them. It will save you time and will save paper.
  • Print presentations in handout format (see instructions on this page).

How to Add More Money to Your Print Quota

  • Use cash at the Library's kiosk by the copiers. Put the money in the kiosk, then login to the computer and tell it the amount you want to add.
  • Students can use their credit card at my.NWTC. Either click on Finances or on the Print Conservation box on myPage. Enter your credit card information and the amount you want to add. You can also always see your print balance here.
  • Community residents can go to the Bursar's Office to use a credit card.

Community users can purchase a print account from the Library staff for $2.00.

Printing from Adobe Reader

To print a .pdf file,

  • For letter paper, Click File→Print.
  • For legal paper, Click File→Print→Preferences and choose legal size on the Paper tab under Size. From the Source, select manual feed.  Insert   legal sized paper in the tray of the printer.
  • It is sometimes convenient to print more than one page of your .pdf file onto a single page, much like the multiple slide feature available in applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint.

To print multiple pages of a .pdf file on one page:

  • Click File→Print.
  • In the Page Handling Section: Select Multiple Pages per sheet from the Page Scaling dropdown menu.
  • Select your desired options from the Pages Per Sheet and Page Order menus.
  • Click OK to print
  • Note: The printer icon on the Adobe tool bar will also bring up the print screen.

    Print an Email

To print a copy of an email, open the email and use the Printable icon (upper left next to compose icon). Using the Office button>print can result in printing extra blank pages.

Change from back-to-back to single page printing

Currently all printing is set for back-to-back (duplex) printing. To change:

    • In the Print dialog box, click on Properties or Preferences (depending on application you are in)
    • Under the Finishing tab, uncheck Print on both sides for single page printing or check for back-to-back printing.
