Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic Program Guide

Starfish Referrals

Faculty can use Starfish to make referrals to the Library for either Technology assistance or Research assistance.

Use the Library Research Assistance Referral for students who need help choosing or narrowing a paper topic, completing academic research, or citing APA or MLA sources.

Use the Library Technology Referral for students who need personalized help with Canvas or other software (do not use for laptop requests).

Faculty can also use Notes to share instructions with students about how to apply for a laptop.  Add the Informational: Program Student Laptop Application Note or the Informational: Adult Basic Ed Laptop Application Note and check the box to copy the student.

Setting up a Research or Technology Instruction Session

Library staff are happy to come to your in-person or web conference classrooms to provide customized instruction about researching or using technology.

Research Sessions - Contact Julie Chapman at 920-498-5490 to schedule daytime or evening sessions. For best results, inform students in advance that they will be working on a project that requires sources.  Please provide Julie with a copy of the project so that she can prepare a customized session for your students.

Technology Sessions - Contact Jaime Jorns at 920-498-5694 or Carole Parish (evenings) at 920-498-6289 to schedule a technology overview for students.  Students can also watch our brief Technology 101 videos.

Ways to Add Library Resources

The NWTC Library subscribes to over 235,000 e-books, 150,000 online videos, 90,000 e-journals, and millions of online articles that are high quality and licensed under copyright agreements.

There are 3 easy ways to add Library resources in your Canvas courses:

  • Use the Apps function -  The Library Search option (instructions) allows you to search almost all our resources and easily add them to your course. If you are specifically adding videos, you can also use the Films on Demand option (instructions) or LinkedIn Learning option (instructions) to just search these large video collections.
  • Add PDF files from Library Resources - Search the Library's resources directly and then download PDF files to add to Canvas. Instructions for ArticlesInstructions for E-Book Chapters
  • Add Persistent URLs from Library Resources - Search the Library's resources directly and then copy special URLs to add to Canvas.  This is best when you want to link to specific pages, chapters, playlists, or individual video clips.

Collection Development

Faculty can send purchasing requests to Kim LaPlante (920-498-5487) to build a core collection of resource materials for their program.

Requests are accepted any time and are filled in the order they are received. Instructors just need to send purchasing information (preferably from web sites or publisher emails) and indicate which campus libraries should have the materials.

Faculty can also donate copies of their current textbook to the Library to put on 2-Hour Reserve.
