Downloading a Chapter

In Ebook Central, you can download a chapter or limited section of a book quickly. The pages become a PDF file that you can read on your computer or mobile device.

Go to the Library’s Ebook Central site https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/nwtc-ebooks and Sign In (at the upper right corner) using your regular NWTC username and password.

Search for the book you want.

Click the Chapter Download icon at the top of the page to download the whole chapter (be aware of print maximums as some chapters may exceed the print allotment).

Specify the page range or select Current Chapter.  Select the desired Citation Style and click Continue.

Click Open PDF and open or save the file.

On your mobile device, you should be able to tap at the top of the image to get options to “Open in . . .”   This will give you a list of apps on your device that you can use for reading the PDF.  (If no apps appear, try to download the free BlueFire Reader app).

Downloading an Entire Ebook

You can also download an entire ebook in Ebook Central (you choose the loan period : 1, 7, 14, or 21 days).

Steps for the First Time Only

  1. If you do not already have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, install the software for free from https://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions.html before starting. This software is necessary for downloading any ebook from any library.  If you do not already have an Adobe account, you will need to create one during the "Authorize Computer" step.  Choose to "Get an Adobe ID Online" and then record your ID and password for later.
  2. If you will be reading the ebook on iOS and Android devices, use the Adobe Digital Editions app, which is free from the Apple App Store and Google Play. You can also use other reader apps as long as they are able to handle the Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Management). Search in the app store of your choice for e.g. 'adobe drm reader' or just 'adobe drm' to get a list of potentially suitable apps.  Please note: You do need an Adobe ID to be able to read downloaded books on a mobile device.

After the Initial Set-Up

If you need to install additional software, the Install step will tell you how.

Adobe Digital Editions step

The final step shows you the file size and book length. You choose the loan period. Last, click on Download Your Book.

Choose loan length

If you are on a computer, choose to open the file that appears.  It will open in Adobe Digital Editions.   If you are on a mobile device, choose to open the ebook in your reader and select "Read it now".

If you started on a computer but really wanted the ebook on your mobile device, choose to save the file instead of opening it.  Remember where you saved it and then email that file to your mobile device.  You can then open it on your device and choose to read it.

Remember, the ebook will not be accessible after the loan period you select : 1, 7, 14, or 21 days.
